A corpus - based study of interaction between Chinese perfective - le and situation types

چکیده
Mandarin Chinese as an aspect language (Norman, 1988:163) has a rich inventory of aspect markers, including perfective -le, -guo and imperfective -zhe, zai. Of these -le is the most studied marker because of its mysterious behaviors. For example, is it necessary to differentiate between the perfective -le and the COS le? Does -le indicate completion or termination? Are there any constraints on the interaction of -le with various situation types? All of these issues have aroused much controversy because different authors have invented different “acceptable” examples to support their arguments. Many of these examples, however, are rarely found in real language, though they are good for the purpose of argumentation.

A corpus-based two-level model of situation aspect
In this paper we will extend Smith’s (1997) two-component aspect theory to develop a two-level model of situation aspect in which situation aspect is modelled as verb classes at the lexical level and as situation types at the sentential level. Situation types are the composite result of the rule-based interaction between verb classes and complements, arguments, peripheral adjuncts and viewpoint...
متن کاملThe Chinese negation marker bu and its association with focus* PEPPINA LEE PO-LUN and PAN HAIHUA
The Chinese negation marker bu ‘not’ is analyzed as a clitic-like element in the literature (Huang 1988; Ernst 1995; etc.) in order to explain why it cannot co-occur with (i) the perfective marker -le or (ii) manner phrases in the V-de construction. Huang (1988) assumes that bu must cliticize onto auxiliaries/modals or the following verb, and since bu cliticizing directly to a verb induces a ‘‘...

By analyzing corpus data, we have shown that the tendencies of restricting perfective past marking to Accomplishments and Achievements and imperfective marking to Statives and Activities as described by the Aspect Hypothesis (Shirai, 1991; Andersen & Shirai, 1996), undesirable in the acquisition of various languages, are desirable in the acquisition of a language like Chinese, because these ten...

Consideration of comparative research as a "separate and different research process" is an issue that has not been addressed thoroughly, at least in Iran, and few of the research conducted under the title of "comparative" refer to studies conducted using different methods than the usual research methods. On the other hand, there has been a rise in the importance of interaction between different...
